What to Know Before Adding A Patio
Building a patio on to your home is a great investment. In addition to adding value to your home, it will also give you and your family a great place to hang out and enjoy the outdoors.
With the option to have family bbq’s, cocktails with friends or even brunch on a beautiful summer day, your new patio will allow you to spend more time entertaining in your own home. I’ve seen many different styles of patios and there are many great ideas to consider when choosing a patio for your home. The best way to learn all the different styles available is by searching around! Everyone’s needs are different, but there is something out there for you!
Before you start planning the design of your patio, figure out how much space you have to work with. Take measurements and sketch out the space. This way when you’re shopping, you can actually keep a diagram of where you can put the materials and avoid over-crowding the space.
One of the most effective ways to get ideas for your patio is by noticing other patios in the neighborhood. Check out what you’re friends and neighbors have or take a drive around the neighborhood to see what’s out there.
Other than homes in the area, consider taking note of patios in public places like parks, malls and restaurants. They’re not private patios, but they still may have features that spark your interest. Don’t forget to check out magazines as well. This is one of my favorite ways to get ideas, as they’re professionally designed!
As I mentioned, everyone has different needs and styles. What type of style do you want out there? Some may prefer some planters, while others may prefer water falls! Fire pits have become more and more popular as well. Fire pits are a great way to sit outside on those cooler nights and roast some marshmallows! Consider the type of bbq you want? Built in bbq’s are gorgeous, but they may take up too much space for your needs. Also consider the type of lighting for your outdoor space.
Choosing the right materials when building your patio will help determine the final look and feel of the space. Most patios are made with cement, stone, brick or even wood. Always take a look of what people are using. Some even use a mix of materials!
Once your patio is ready, you’ll be glad you took the time to figure out all these details. You can absolutely consider your new patio a new part of your home that your friends and family can take advantage of!
