The Area Rug Pad – Keep That Rug from Slipping
Rugs have two issues that need to be dealt with when you use them inside your home. The first is the wear is tear on them. This happens when furniture is on them for long periods of time as well as from being walked on. The second issue is that rugs don’t stay in place. They tend to move across the floor slowly whether on hard floors or carpet.
The solution to these problems is to get an area rug pad to help both at once. The pad can help the rug from wearing out as quickly since it gives it some padding and will keep it from breaking apart. Pads do a much better job than other solutions like tape, velcro, staples, and glues.

How to fit an area rug pad to the rug?
It’s important to try to find a pad that is smaller than the size of the rug. You don’t want the pad to be seen so it needs to be slightly smaller even if just by a few inches on each side. If you buy a pad that says it’s made for a 5′ by 8′ rug just expect it to not quite be that size and that’s perfect. Sometimes pads have to be cut to size because you have an odd shaped rug.
What type of pad should you get?
Some pads are thick and others are thin. A thick pad provides more cushion. These are best used when you are planning on having a rug under heavy furniture like a dining room table. Thin pads don’t provide the same cushion but do help the rug from not slipping. Most thin pads are called non-slip pads because they help hold the rug in place. If you are going to need to cut the rug pad to size, the thin ones are easier to work with.
Be sure to at least get an inexpensive rug pad as soon as possible. It will help extend the life of your rug and make it much easier to work with.
