Small Kitchen Design : Some Tips
Designing a kitchen is difficult, but designing a small kitchen is that much harder still. There is so much that needs to go into a kitchen that putting it in a small space is very challenging. When doing the planning, it’s important to mention the three mainstays of any kitchen: Appliances, Storage and Lighting.
It’s important that you think about these three elements throughout the design as they are going to hold the key to a successful kitchen design. If you get these factors right then you will have a kitchen that will contain everything you need but also one that feels spacious.

You could also consider using a table or what’s commonly known as an ‘island unit’ in the middle of the kitchen. Such units provide a great workspace that can be accessed from all sides and as such they often become the vocal point of a kitchen. They also provide extra space for storage beneath them.
By changing the layout of your kitchen so that it is a ‘gallery style’ kitchen will also provide more space as the cupboards and appliances are organised in a more space efficient manner.
A great way of creating space without changing the layout of a kitchen is to downsize your appliances. There are smaller versions of everything available these days and this can be a great way to free up space.
Placing a breakfast bar at the end or the side of a kitchen will create a very useful space that the whole family can eat at. It also takes up far less room than a normal table and is less intrusive.
It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book but that’s because it gets results. The use of lighting to create space is a tried and tested technique and will work in almost any kitchen. It’s incredible how much space can be created just by putting up some lights.
By hanging your pots and pans on the walls above your work surface you can save space in your cupboards below for more baulky items or for an extra appliance.
To conclude there are many ways of making a kitchen appear bigger than it is, even if you have limited space. Don’t get disheartened, just plan your ideas thoroughly and get going.
