Save Money By Insulating Steel Buildings Yourself
If you have just purchased a steel building or already have one, you might be thinking about also adding insulation to it. Insulating steel buildings is not the easiest thing to do, but if you take your time and follow the pointers here as well as any directions that might come with both the building and the insulation that you buy, you should be able to do it yourself and for a lot less money than if you were to hire someone else to do it for you.
Things to note before you put in the insulation. You need to understand that it is the size and shape of your steel building that will determine just how much insulation you are going to need. The climate is also another factor you need to include. Add these factors together and you will get an idea of how much you need and how much it will cost approximately. You can take this information to your home improvement center and they should be able to help you get the right amount.
You might want to look at insulating foam because there are some that do not require that it be covered by drywall. You can also use fiberglass batting if you do not want to use the foam.
If you go with fiberglass you can choose from batting or blanket style both of which you can roll and unroll. Fiberglass batting generally comes with a barrier that is to help against any vapor that might get into the building. Should you decide to go with the foam, you will find that this comes in different kinds of kits. There is also a third type that is very inexpensive and that is called Acoustical Fire Barrier which is great against fire.
You can also find insulation that is made with items that have been recycled like denim, wool and plastics. These are probably the least expensive of all the insulation on the market. However; they may not be the best to guard against hazards such as mold. So make sure that no matter what kind of insulation it is, that it says it is mold resistant especially.
Probably the biggest reason that people want to insulate their steel buildings is to keep the warmth inside during the cold winter months. You should also consider the fact that you may need to protect against water, ice and vapor that might destroy the frame of your building by corroding the framework of the building.
You will only require a couple of things to install your installation. You will need metal tape, tape that is double sided, insulation and a measuring tape. Once you have these items you are set ready to get started. If you are just now starting to construct your building you will be putting the insulation on between the framework of the building and the actual sheeting of the walls of the building.
The first thing you are going to want to do is take the tape that has two adhesive sides and place it on the framework of the building the insulation is going. If fiberglass is what you are using just carefully unroll some of your insulation and put it on the tape. Once you have done this it is important that you make sure there is enough room for air to flow through the insulation and the walls of the building.
After you have laid down the insulation take the steel sheets and put it over the insulation. Take metal strapping and tighten it so that it holds the insulation to the walls.
Should you have a building that was erected prior to wanting to install the insulation put the double sided tape on the frame on the inside of the building. You will need to make sure that the tape is put only where the insulation can actually fit.
After the tape is on you will take the insulation and put it wherever you put the tape. It is important that there is enough slack in the insulation for air to circulate.
Take your metal sheets and make sure to tightly reattach to the framework of the building. Take the metal tape that you have and put it on all of the seams in order to ensure that the insulation works properly.
Safety note, always make sure to wear safety goggles, hard hat and of course breathing mask as a safety precaution.
