A leaking water heater can cause thousands of dollars of damage to a home; therefore leaks must be stopped as soon as possible.

The main root for the leak should have to look out and there may happen that the tank will need replacement. Before jumping into the service of an expert plumber, try your hands in some repairing so that you do not have any further damage.

Turn off all power to the tank at the breaker if using an electric water heater. If using a gas water heater, turn off gas using the gas shut off valve on the gas line that goes into the tank.

Find out the knob which usually looks like a wheel and is normally placed on the right hand side of the water tank where the cold water inlet is placed. Rotate it directionally until you find that the knob will not rotate anymore. Also remember that you do not have to over tighten the knob as there may be chance of breaking if excess pressure is exerted on it. If there is a lever instead of a knob, then rotate it in which ever direction it will move such that it forms 90 degree to the pipe.

Go outside your home and check your water meter if tuning the knob or lever does not stop the running of water into the tank. Have a deep look and notice the valve which is very close to the street. It is basically a small valve that may be tuned on with the help of pliers but there are also times where you may need a meter key to tune on.

To stop any future damage, use a garden hose to drain the tank. Screw the hose onto the drain situated at the bottom of the tank. Then open the drain valve in a slow pace. Ensure that hose must drain the water into a sink or gutter instead of draining into your grass or driveway.

Before blaming the water heater tank for the leak, make sure the water relief valve has not opened, which would cause a puddle on the floor. Rust and sediment may drain out of the hose with the water and damage your grass or driveway, so make sure you properly drain your water.

Do not give a try to fix a water heater if you do not have any experience as it may prove risky to your life if it is not installed in a proper manner.
