How to Oil Paint

The combination of pigments with oil creates oil paint. Today, linseed oil is mainly used to create paint, even though paint in the past was known to be mixed with an array of substances.

Different colors of oil paint are layered and blended as an artists moves along in creating a piece of art. You do not have to be a genius at art to create an oil painting.

Oil paints take longer to dry than water-based paints. The moisture in oil paints do not evaporate like water-based paints. If this is your first experience with oil paint, be aware that depending upon the humidity levels at your location, oil paints can take weeks to dry. Projects that require a significant amount of time for construction should use oil paints because of the length of time it may take to dry. A negative side to oil paint is meeting client deadlines while it is still wet. It’s not smart to rush on an oil painting. A painting can be destroyed this way.

Beginning of Oil Paint

Nature provided the base of all paints using elements such as plants and flowers boiled and baked in the sun by world renowned artists like Van Eyck. Some also mixed wax or other ingredients into the concoction. The mid 1800’s introduced paint in tubes with cap covers like they are today.

The advent of tube-packaged paints gave artists more flexibility and time. Little time was spent on making paint and more time was spent on deciding what to paint. Painting was not the same to artists after this. Packaged paints gave the artist more freedom, flexibility, and a wide variety of consistent colors. The impressionist movement is thought to be a direct result of the freedom created by packaged paints.

Using Oil Paint

Select a well-ventilated spot. Oil paints may leave a scent behind. Even though a paint chemical may say odorless, it may not have a preferable scent.

Canvases and palettes are important to painters, but light is an important factor in how a painting turns out. Have plenty of light when working. Find a space with natural light before turning on any lighting.

Canvas paintings are generally oil paintings. Primer is needed even for oil paints on a canvas to prevent fibers from quickly absorbing oil. This primer used by artists is called gesso. Primer with water as its basic component for artists is gesso. Apply at least two thin coats to your canvas, allowing each coat to thoroughly dry.

Once the gesso has dried, it is time to jump in and begin your painting. Use a brush, fingers or any tool you desire to paint. You can draw the image on the canvas first or just apply the paint and see where it leads. Have a passion for your painting.
