How to Plan The Lighting for Children’s Bedrooms
Parents so often rush into decorating their children’s bedrooms and eagerly buy the furniture, curtains, rugs and other stuff but leave the planning and placement of the lights to the very end. Actually it should be the other way round. The reason is simple – the end result is much better plus there are no messy wires running along the wall or floor.
Begin by making a note of all the light points in the room. The next step is to chalk out the layout of the room. You have to decide where you want to place the bed. Figure out whether a bedside table will be better on the right or left of the bed, whether you want to add a floor lamp and where the study desk and wardrobes should be. Now check if the light points are close to where you want to place the desk, bedside table etc. If some points need to be moved or new ones have to be added, do so now before you proceed to painting or putting wallpaper on the walls.

Ceiling lights provide general lighting in a room. In your child’s bedroom these should be in the centre of the room or alternatively in the centre of the activity area. The general lighting should be bright and cheerful and not dim and dreary.
A desk lamp should be used for task lighting. The lamp should cast light on the pages of your child’s book so that they can read or write without straining their eyes at night. The wattage of the bulb should be chosen accordingly.
If your child is very young then you may need a low-wattage night lamp which is very dim and doesn’t cast a harsh light on the child’s eyes when they are sleeping. Night lamps provide a sense of security to young children who are afraid of the dark.
For older children, go for bedside table lamps that match the decor of the room. The lamps are not only great for reading in bed but can also add a delightful and fun accent to the room’s decor.
More than the ceiling lights it’s the table lamps and floor lamps that will dictate the mood and ambience of a room. So make sure you choose them with care and use the right wattage bulbs.
Once all the planning and buying is done comes the fun task of putting it all together and watching your ideas and themes for your kid’s bedroom come to life.
