Initialize the actual task by making way for a temporary base board. This is because the roof with the broken truss would not be strong enough to carry your weight. To build a provisional roof base, install scrap boards across the roof rafters. Exert some force on the constructed base to check its strength.

Climb on the temporary base and take the measurements of the broken or faulty roof truss. In order to derive accurate dimensions, you can take the underlying lumber length into account. Be sure while taking the measurements and avail the services of an expert if confusion crops up.

Expose the underlying lumber of the roof and cut out two patches from it. Each fragment should have a length of at least 4 feet. Take help of another person who would hold the truss in place. While the other person keeps the affected truss in alignment with the rest of the setup, you install the lumber patches on either side of the break. Use wood screws to attach the patches to the concerned truss.

Keep the overall pattern of the roof trusses in mind while aligning the broken truss with the lumber patches. Do not leave any flaw in the setup as that could make the roof collapse.
