Fine Art Landscapes With Distance And How To Make Them
By using great colors and painting techniques fine art landscapes make the viewer experience each attribute of the painting with deep emotion. Creating distances in landscape paintings is truly an art. With practice and much experience you will be able to make a flat canvas appear 3-dimensional. By obeying the following steps your landscape will be given new life.
Does it matter which medium is used to create distance in the landscape?
The principles are the same no matter which medium is being used. The further away from the foreground the less detail should be apparent. The colors, definition and texture of any of the objects in the landscape become less defined the further away they are from the foreground images.
Overlapping elements:
To get the affect of your scene wandering off in the distance you must overlap your elements and pay attention while doing so. Perspective is when closer objects are made larger and more defined while further objects are less defined, smaller and overlapped by the larger ones making it seem they are more off into the distance.
Elements further from the foreground need to be less defined and smaller. Paint or layer the huge tree over the grass lines that recede, the rocks and the distant mountains to achieve that close effect, doing this shall make the tree seem to be directly in front of you. If the colors are toned down and the texture and details less defined this same tree can be used smaller off in the distance. To force a line of smaller trees off into the distance you can simply place a large tree in front of them.
To create distance and perspective :
To create a great illusion of distance in a work of art the objects should be painted with less contrast and lighter colors so that they seem to be in the distance. Your choice of colors also make a difference. Using cooler colors to paint your distant objects will help them to work. Foreground objects need to be painted in warm colors.
When creating the sky line the colors of the sky will be on the lighter side that is closest to the ground or horizon line. As the sky goes up higher the colors become darker. Water that is close to the foreground is lighter with details that would indicate the undergrowth of the water. The reflections of the sun and other objects appear in the foreground. As the water moves away into the distance the colors become denser and deeper or darker making the water appear a long way off. The warmth of the foreground pushes the cooler colors to the background.
Adjusting the colors, values and contrast of a piece creates depth and distance in it. The colors should be warmer the closer you want them to appear.
