Your window treatments should be functional as well as stylish. They should reflect your personality and blend well with the interior of your home. Changing draperies is one of the easiest and most affordable things you can do to instantly change the look of your room or house. And depending on how much sunlight you want blocked out, it can even save you some money on electricity bills. So, some serious considerations should be given before you buy or choose your drapery.

Here are some tips for you:

1. Fabric – In choosing the right fabric, try to find one that fits your individuality. You might use heavy cloths with embroidery or sheer and lacy fabrics. Whatever you end up buying, it should match your existing furniture and artwork at home.

2. Opacity -Do you want to block or lessen the intensity of natural light coming through your window? Get an opaque drapery to keep it down. This is mostly recommended in your TV room or media room.

3. Pattern – After considering the fabric and how much light you want to have in your room, think also of the pattern of your drapery. As with any other accessory in your home, it should blend well with the rest of your interiors. Patterns are the first clues to your personality. Do you like bold colors and heavy lines? Simple stripes are also commonly available.

4. Layers – Controlling natural light in your room is easy with layers of drapes. Try to consider sheers beneath heavy opaque drapery for when you want to relax by the window and read a book. It also gives a dramatic silhouette at night.

5. Measurement – Before buying your curtains, measure your window to know the length and width you would want to cover. Just always remember that your drapery’s length should be from the curtain rod (and not the top of your window) to two inches above the floor.

6. Hardware – Finally, before hanging, consider the hardware you will use for your drapery. There are different curtain rods for different styles of window treatments. You might also want to check out the different curtain rings that go well with your hanging. Think about using stylish finials in your draperies. They are fitted at the end of the curtain rod and are sometimes the only visible part of the rod. They come in wood, metal, or glass. There are also holdbacks available. These are the ones keeping your drapes open. They come in different materials and vary from simple to intricate designs.

Looking to install new window shades within your home? Check out this great guide on double Roman shades.

UPVC windows and doors are the current trend in the housing industry. The chemical name for upvc is un-plasticized polyvinylchloride but it is commonly referred to as un-plasticized PVC or as the tougher vinyl.

Cousin to the most commonly used thermoplastic polymer in the construction field, un-plasticized PVC does not act as a substitute for PVC. While PVC is mostly used in pipes and drains, upvc material is a tougher version of PVC and is mainly used to build sophisticated windows and doors in a house. Upvc frames around glass panes form the standard model in upvc windows and doors. These are also available in sliding versions for a different look.

Un-plasticized polyvinylchloride is available in a variety of colors and shades. They can also sport an elegant wood veneer finish and are great replacement to traditional wooden windows and doors differing only in that they are cheaper and will never have to endure warping scenarios.

There are many advantages to using upvc material instead of the traditional wood or metal frames. It is the most energy saving option available in doors and window frames. Upvc being a bad conductor of heat serves to trap the heat within the homes during winter and also insulates the house from the soaring temperatures outside during the hotter months. UPVC windows and doors further lets you save on energy bills as they provide a natural entry for sunlight preventing the need for additional artificial lighting during the daytime.

UPVC also aids in sound proofing your home. Moreover windows and doors made with this tough material offer excellent security features. They are also fitted with multipoint locking system for added security.

Upvc windows and doors are cheaper than normal windows and doors and also do not entail major maintenance while at the same time giving the added benefit of being scratch resistant. Upvc is famed for its long lasting properties. They are impervious to regular climate changes and are able to tolerate extreme temperatures as well. Upvc windows and doors are resistant to termite, corrosion and are also fire proof. It ensures an air-tight environment keeping out dust and pollution from entering the premises.

No other material for windows and doors can combine all the advantages offered by UPVC windows and doors. No wonder its popularity with construction contractors is constantly on the rise.

Want to improve your home’s insulation and to reduce your energy bills? You may want to replace your old windows with energy efficient windows! Follow these tips for the proper way to remove existing windows and to install energy efficient new ones.

1. Carefully measure each window to be replaced. Take care to record the full height and width of each window frame. Measure twice to ensure accuracy, and then make a detailed list of the windows that you need to purchase. Next, measure all the trim pieces around your old windows. If you are careful, then you may be able to reuse these trim boards, or you may want to add new trim boards to your material list.

2. Purchase the highest-rated energy efficient windows you can afford. New windows may seem to cost a lot, but the more you spend on windows now, the more you will cut your energy bills in the future! Your windows will eventually pay for themselves and the continue paying in energy savings. If you are purchasing new trim lumber, always buy a few extra linear feet to allow room for cutoff.

3. Tear out your existing windows. After you bring your new windows home, carefully tear out the trim pieces that you do not plan to reuse (if any) around the outside of each window. You will notice after you tear these pieces off that the nails holding the window in will now be exposed. Remove all the nails with a nail puller, except for one on each side.

From the inside of each window, carefully cut around all the edges with a utility knife to free the window from your Sheetrock, paint, and caulk. Return outside, and remove the remaining nails — be careful not to let the window drop out and break. Once the nails are gone, remove your window carefully.

4. Begin to install your new energy efficient windows! Carefully unpack each window, being careful not to bend the flange around any window — these bend quite easily. Next, place your window in the opening with the right side up and the locks facing inside. Find one person to hold the window while you line up the window from the inside. Your helper should also be prepared to fasten the window with nails or screws at your command.

5. Be sure to align your windows correctly. From the inside, carefully align each window frame in such a way that the little gap between the window and the window opening is the same all the way around. If your Sheetrock completely hides this gap, then the distance from the edge of the glass to the Sheetrock needs to be the same all the way around. Once the window is accurately aligned, then have your helper fasten one nail or screw in each corner and open the window to ensure its function. At this point, fasten the entire window.

6. Determine how long to cut your trim boards. Measure around the outside window frame to decide this. Carefully cut all of your trim pieces — a chop saw may be best for this, but a skill saw with a sharp blade will work. Once you have cut all the trim pieces, fasten them in place with nails or screws.

7. Caulk around the new window inside and out. Also caulk around the seams of all your trim boards and your nail holes. Conclude your window installation by painting the trim boards to match your existing trim.

In an economy in which we all are looking for ways to save money, this energy efficient window upgrade can double your savings: You will save money by doing the project yourself, and you will reap continual savings on your utility bills! As you are installing, remember to always measure for your windows twice and to take care to be safe with your tools.

Converting your loft can be an ideal way to add some extra space to your home. Not only can it save you the upheaval of moving house, it can also add value to your property. Getting your lighting and ventilation right are crucial in ensuring that your loft conversion becomes the light airy space you’re hoping for, and fitting a Velux window can transform a dark attic into a beautiful, useable space filled with potential.

Fitting a Velux window is arguably best left to a professional roofer! If you’re keen to have go yourself, however, here are some tips that may help:

The first decision you’ll need to make is the size of window you require and the preferred positioning for the window. It is essential that the dimensions for the opening in your roof are measured exactly. To create the opening for your new window you’ll need to remove the slates or tiles from the appropriate area of your roof and cut through the rafters underneath. It’s important to ensure that you have sufficient support between the floor and the roof beams to take the weight until the cross beams (also known as dwangs) are cut and fitted.

The smallest of the Velux window range can usually be fitted between trusses without having to cut the beams. If the window is larger, it’s advisable to consult a structural engineer; drawings can easily be provided and will cost between £100 and £200.

• Your Velux window should be laid flat to unpack and opened with care

• You’ll need to remove the glass from the frame for fitting; do this by pushing in the 2 small pins located in the hinges

• Fit the brackets to the 4 corners of the window frame using the screws provided

• The window frame should then be placed on top of the batons and fixed in place using the screws supplied

• The window must be fitted flat in relation to the roof; if necessary, use the black wedge supplied under one of the corners in order to ensure that the window is stable

• When this stage is complete, you are ready to install the flashings around the window. Ensure that the flashings used are correct for your roof type; this stage is critical in ensuring that there are no leaks. The lower flashing should be fitted first. The soakers should then be fitted up each side of the window and fixed to the roof covering. The soakers are joined to each other using a fold-over tab. They also have a serrated top edge which helps to keep them in position. The top flashing is fitted last

• When the flashings have been installed, the slates or tiles can now be replaced

• When you are ready to reinstall the glass, the window should be passed upside down through the roof opening. Position the hinges into their openings and as the window is closed, the lugs will automatically open and hold the window in place. The window can then be rotated and closed.

Your choice in detergents should be environment friendly, so do consider getting a biodegradable substance so that it could be safely incorporated into our existing sewage systems.

You now need to make a thorough inspection of the windows you want cleaned. Take note if there are any windows which are hard to reach, so that you are able to climb a ladder. Also make sure that all the windows are closed before you hose them down.

You can now take the garden hose to the windows by using a strong nozzle which will give you a lot of water pressure to wash off the dirt. Once you have got most of the hard dirt off you can now start with your soapy mixture.

Do use good quality cloths and sponges to wash your windows. They should not leave any trace behind them when you finally dry off the windows. To get your windows sparkling clean with almost no particles left on them, you should use up or down strokes or left to right whichever is more comfortable. By using circular motions, you only move the dirt around and around.

Give the windows a good rinse and start to dry off immediately. Do not let the windows dry on their own as soap and water traces will leave unsightly marks. This will cost you time and more effort as you will have to visit each window again to get them sparkling clean.

Once you are happy with the results you can then start cleaning each window on the inside. This will take a different approach as you will not be able to use the garden hose. Now a simple bucket and clean water will do the trick to loosen up the dirt and grime.

Then use your soapy mixture exactly like you did for the outside windows and repeat everything until you are satisfied with your effort. Another good way to get even more tips for Window cleaning for beginners, is to watch videos that were made by professionals.

Finding great window cleaners is easy when you know where to look! Start enjoying cleaner and brighter windows now when you use the professional services of a London window cleaning company!

Privacy in your home from prying eyes on the outside has always been important to people. There are a variety of different types of window treatments that people use to keep that privacy. They use curtains, drapes, blinds and shades. These are great to keep out the sun on hot days as well as give your home privacy when wanted. Probably one of the least used type would be window shutters for the inside of the house. Most people think of the outside of the house when it comes to shutters.

There is no reason that you can not use window shutters to add privacy. Not only do they provide great privacy but they also add a unique elegance to the room as well. Depending upon what style you get, they can add a lot more to your window treatment than other types, especially blinds.

If you come to the decision that you might like to try to add shutters to the inside of your windows, below you will find easy steps that will make your job of installing your shutters a lot easier.

There are a variety of different types of things that you will need in order for you to complete this project. You will need the shutters of course, the hardware that comes with your shutters, a saw, screwdriver, paint or stain, polyurethane, paint brush, tape measure. Depending upon what kind of shutters you get will determine the materials that you will need to be able to complete the project. The ones mentioned here are the most commonly required items.

Before you begin you need to decide whether or not you want the window shutters to be installed on the inside of the window or if you would rather have them as outside mounts. Since the window frames are rarely perfectly square, probably the easier route would be to use an outside mount.

We will go with the outside mount here for easier installation, this will take less time and gives you more flexibility with regards to how you hang the shutters. With outside mounts you can hang shutters vertically or horizontally.

The first thing that you will do is mount your hanging strips along each side of the frame of the window. Now you will take the shutter panels and hinge them together with face mount hinges that are supplied by the company that made the shutters. Make sure you have a spacer between each of the shutter panels so that you will be able to close the shutters easily.

Now you will take the hinges and connect them to the shutters, make sure to follow the shutters manufacturers instructions on how to place the hinges on the shutters. You will now want to make sure to mark holes on the hanging strips so that you will know where to connect the hinges at. Once you have done that, you can go ahead and drill holes for the screws for the hinges.

The final installation step is to actually attach the shutters to the hanging strips.

Final note: If you decide to buy unfinished shutters, it is advisable that you paint or stain them before you install them. And if you have louvered shutters it will be a lot less time consuming and easier to use spray paint for these types of shutters.

Whether you are looking for some privacy or a way to spruce up your windows, we offer a wide selection of blinds, draperies, and shutters Toronto to match your household comfort needs. Since 1981, we are dedicated to delivering excellent service and affordable products. Our customers deserve the best.

If your home is not properly insulated you can see your utility bills skyrocket, and your house may be a bit cold. Window insulation film can help with this. Using an insulation kit will allow you deal with patio doors, large windows, and small windows.

Heavy-duty insulating film is intended for indoor use on varnished or painted wood, vinyl, or aluminum, and is a great choice over double-glazing. With painted frames, though, you will want to test the soundness of your paint. If the surface itself is not sound, the insulation will lose its effectiveness.

Installing window insulation film is often a straightforward project to undertake -

Step 1. All you do is attach double-sided tape all around a window or door, making sure to leave no gaps, and then press the shrink film to the tape.

Step 2. Using a simply blow dryer, heat up the surface of the film and you will notice all of the wrinkles on the film disappear.

Step 3. Clean up the area by trimming all of the extra film off the edges using a craft knife that will not mar the frame.

Step 4. That’s all there is to installing window insulation kits, so just sit back, relax and enjoy your more cost effective heating.

You usually get a detailed guide on how to install these window films with the kit itself.

A home kit of this nature usually has all you need to fit the normal window types. Usually the kit includes a certain length of clear film, alcohol wipes, cleaning strips, and of course double sided tape. After the season ends, you can easily remove both the tape and the film and it is very easy to clean up. There is no left over residue either.

However, there are other options besides this shrink film, such as those, which adheres direct to the windows like the energy window films. Used in all seasons you can use these without taping it in allowing you to keep in heat or cold air out.

You can save as much as 18% on your heating bills thanks to the variety of draft detecting tools, such as a detector to find leaks and drafts as well as kits. The included tools are able to check walls, windows and even ducts to see if any place is overly cold.

Film or plastic window insulation is a great way to keep out drafts. They are easy to install, are easy to afford, and help you to conserve energy.

Jim Hartburg writes articles, reviews, and products reports on a variety of topics, including those on the energy-saving Energy Saving Window Film and the versatile Battery Operated Eyelash Curler.

If you are going to save on your energy bills by draught proofing your sash windows, you might want to spend some extra time taking care of all of the draughts in your home and increase your overall energy costs. A home loses at least 25% percent of its total heat when it is draughty.

Sash windows often are the biggest causes of heat loss because of their size and location. Most of these windows are older and have not been maintained properly or upgraded to meet the demands of energy efficiency.

Checking for draughts throughout your home will alert you to the areas that need immediate attention. By moving a lit candle slowly around the frames of doors and windows you will know when there is a draught when the candle flickers. Move the candle across the small panes of the sash window to identify any loose panes.

Heavy curtains or drapes are one way that a person can reduce draughts from their sash windows. When sash windows are very old, the need to have the window repaired and made energy efficient may be unavoidable, however using heavy drapes will keep heat from escaping.

If the panes in the window are loose, using silicone bathtub caulking will provide the necessary sealant to secure the panes and keep air from escaping through them. This also is a very affordable to treat large window panes.

It may be necessary to have panes on sash windows re-glazed or have a secondary glazing put on them. This will help to extend the life of the windows. You may want to invest in a re-fitting of the windows to bring them up to code and make them completely energy efficient. When a window has been refitted you will be able to save on your energy bills by draught proofing your sash windows and achieve the greatest efficiency.

If you’re going to save on your energy bills by Sash window draught proofing, you may want to spend little extra time taking care of all of the draughts in your home in the form of sash window repairs London and cut your general energy costs.
