However, you would require some necessary tools and items to troubleshoot the appliance. Fixing an electric iron demands for a voltage tester, screwdriver, an electrical tape and distilled white vinegar.

In case the steam being sprayed on the clothes being ironed leaves some deposits, the control switch of the iron be placed on the “clean” position. If the appliance has no such position, the whole water is to be emptied into a bowl and fill- in the white vinegar and water.

Let the iron sit for approximately 30 minutes to soften the deposits. Then plug in the iron and while the iron is sitting upright, select the steam feature. This will clean out any mineral deposits left by hard water. Use caution when you do this–the water will be extremely hot. Repeat this application several times to completely remove the mineral deposits.

Check the electrical cord and check the thermostat and replace if necessary. There are chances that wires of the electrical cord are overused and battered. Well, in that case, replace the cord itself.

Check the outlet with a voltmeter or check the circuit breaker box to make sure the circuit has not been tripped, if the light on your iron still does not light. If you are using a GFI outlet, press the reset button, and plug in the iron again.

When repairing the soleplate, first unplug the iron. Use a sponge and commercial soleplate cleaner or baking soda and water to remove dirt buildup on the soleplate. Rinse well with water and dry. Don’t use harsh abrasives or immerse an electric iron in water. If by all attempts you precede to fix the iron, better hire the services of a repair man.
